                   English Reading Strategies is one of the most difficult courses because there're many vocabulary and sentences structure so it's hard to translate and understand.
                  This course gives many skills such as reading skills, writing skills, speaking skills, listening skill grammar and vocabulary. For me the most difficult lesson is Extensive Reading because vocabulary and sentences structure it's really hard to understand.
                  In my opinion the most difficult lesson is "News Stories: Natural Disasters" because if you don't know the meaning of vocabulary, you will can't understand the sentence and you can't do exercise.
                  In my opinion the easy lesson is "Scanning" because Scanning is a skill that you use in daily life and you can look only for a specific fact or piece of information without reading everything.

                 The most favorite lesson is "A Healthy diet" because I'm interested in health and it's easy for me so I can used in my life. In the lesson recommend great tips for health such as nutritious foods, managing eating and avoidance a food unhealthy diet.

Week 14 : Classic Ann Landers

                     In class we learned about Classic Ann Landers. The teacher assigned to understand the passage in handouts. It's about Ann Landers, she is adviser. She advice a person, who has a problem form letters. There are 4 letters in handouts.

                     First letter, the problem is sender must stay home alone. It makes she worried about locked window and doors because hers friend has raped by stranger because she forgot to lock the doors.
                Second letter, the problem is sender has a problem with word "Get well soon" because his wife has a cancer. He think that word is lying cause his wife can't get well soon and he doesn't want to listen it from visitors.
                Third letter, the problem is sender has a problem with new girlfriend's ex husband because she think her often interpose with hers children like cutting hers girl's hair or volunteered to be a room mother or hers youngest daughter's class.
                Fourth  letter, the problem is sender has a problem with his friend. He and his wife have visited to his friend home they aren't talk about themselves because his friend are talk himself  and his family.

           After that we read "Secret of the Christmas Box". For this class I got many knowledges and vocabulary. I used scanning skill and skimming skill. 

Week 12 : Read faster!

                    In class the teacher gave sheet "Read faster!" and assigned to read and understanding its. The passage about Read faster. It's difficult because sentences structure and vocabulary really hard to understand and then the teacher asked for 3 question
1. How do you improve English skills?
2. How do you read in English?
3. What are obstacles to faster reading?

Question 1 
            For me I think don’t be afraid to make mistakes and practise every day. make myself a study plan. decide how much time a week I'm going to spend studying it. Especially Practise the 4 core skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. They all need to be worked on for me to improve.

            When I read in English I train myself to read more quickly by forced timing.I don't try to understand every word.and try to understand the overall meaning of a sentence or passage.Especially don't translate every word I only use a dictionary if a word keeps appearing in a text and I still don't understand it.

        In page 62 Hints for reading practice I got knowledge about how to increase your reading speed?
          1.Reading words one at a time is bad because it is more difficult to get a general idea of a passage.
          2.It is a good idea to skim through a passage first to get a general idea of each paragraph.
          3.Titles and paragraph headings can help us to get the outline of a passage.
          4.The topic sentence of an information-giving paragraph in English is most often at the beginning.
          5.Sometimes we know the first sentence is not the topic sentence because it does not seem to give us enough new information.
          6.The closing paragraph of a piece of writing often summarizes the essence of the passage.

           Today I have more knowledge from this lesson and I will give everything form it for make me better than.

Week 11 : Extensive reading

• What is extensive reading?
        Extensive reading is reading as much as possible, for your own pleasure, at a difficulty level at which you can read smoothly and quickly without looking up words or translating to English as you go. In other words, instead of spending a half hour decoding a tiny part of one book (also known as intensive reading), you read many simpler books that are at or slightly below the level at which you read fluently. This lets you get used to reading more complex sentences with ease, reinforces the words you already know and helps you learn new words from context.

         The teacher gave a handouts and assigned to read a very long text about extensive reading, reading and writing and understand it. This lesson is about "Extensive Reading" it's one of technique in reading and it can help for TOEFL/TOEIC tests and make more skills such as Reading skills ,writing skills ,speaking skills ,listening skill grammar and vocabulary.
We were asked to write a summary of each paragraph. After that we did exercises. Extensive reading helps students improve reading skills and it also allows students to improve reading speed much more quickly than by reading difficult texts.

Week 10 : Scanning

       In class the teacher gave a handouts and assigned to read and we did exercises. I get a lot of knowledge from this course and can be used to learn the English language.

   • What is scanning?

          Scanning is a type of speed reading technique which is used when you want to find specific information without necessarily understanding the rest of the text or passage. For example, you might scan the list of names in a telephone directory in order to find a phone number. You might scan job advertisement to find a right job.

   • How do you scan?

         1. need to have a question in mind - what the specific information you need;

         2. decide on a key word or expressions that will signal the needed information;

         3. do not read every word, i.e. you can skip over unimportant words or read only the words that answer your questions ; and 

         4. need to read fast.

         • Scanning is a skill that you use in daily life. The following exercises are examples of texts that you can use to practice your scanning skill.

Week 9 : West meets East

             Today we still studies about West meets East. The teacher assigned to did page 107-110. We used guessing word skill to do exercise and practice speaking vocabulary.
             We get new vocabulary and pronunciation skills correctly.

             We read the passage "Expat in Asia" that passage is about  interview of Micheal. He comes form Africa and he came to Taiwan for teach English before he came to Taiwan, he had travelling in India and he met some Canadians who told him "Taiwan was a great place to teach English". Micheal said "I went to Taiwan because I wanted to continue my travels." He stayed long term in Taiwan because he think  Taiwan has become his home over time and it's part of him.
             He like that he can live in Taiwan and make decent money with a schedule that he have a lot of control over. He think Taiwan is an easy to live, but he find driving seriously problematic and have grown to dislike it intensely.

Week 8 : West meets East

            In class, we started to unit "West meets east". Teacher assigned to finding word meaning such as Hello kitty toys, Tazo Chai Tea, Wasabi mashed, McDonald's meal and etc.

    Example • McDonald's meal is the world's largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants, serving around 68 million customers daily in 119 countries across 36,538 outlets. Founded in the United States in 1940, the company began as a barbecue restaurant operated by Richard and Maurice McDonald.(refer : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonald%27s )

             • Wasabi mashed is a plant of the Brassicaceae family, which includes cabbages, horseradish, and mustard. Its stem is used as a condiment and has an extremely strong pungency more akin to hot mustard than the capsaicin in a chili pepper, producing vapours that stimulate the nasal passages more than the tongue.(refer :  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasabi)

                 

           The teacher assigned to do exercise. She did to read the passage "The Asianization of United States" and to do understanding the passage. The passage is more difficult than old passage that I had ever done before because that is more difficult vocabulary and the subject matter is too hard for understanding.

           Finally, she assigned to do next exercise on page 106-108.

Week 7 : Fashion

               Today we learned about Fashion. Fashion is a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body, or furniture. Fashion is a distinctive and often constant trend in the style in which a person dresses.
              We practice speaking vocabulary in sheet "Famous fashion items" word such as bikini, miniskirt and etc.
               The teacher did to read and summarize the passage page 69.
          Paragraph 1 : It's not true that japanese are more conservative than American, especially when it come to dress. 
          Paragraph 2 : Yumiko had the bad experiences because of her clothes.
          Paragraph 3 : The second time she was frighted and shocked because a man camped to her and wouldn't go away.
          Paragraph 4 : Yumiko realized that it was her clothes that were the problem.
          Paragraph 5 :  Yumiko changed the clothes she wore so that she could look more like the Americans.

Week 6 :Today’s technology

              Today, We learned in new sheet "Researchers worry as teens grow up online". She did to summarize information about opinions of researchers and teenagers from a sheet then she did to share your information to friends and write on whiteboard. I used previewing skill,scanning skill, skimming skill, guessing the words meaning from the context skill,and making inferences skill.

Before finished class she ordered me to find picture about fashion in the world. And the teacher assigned set a tables in class for test. I think, the test is rather easy because it has many the content of the sheet.

I thought 3 hours per day using the Internet too much because we waste time on things that are not useful and time lost to the Internet can be useful for many activities.

Week 5 : Today’s technology

              This class studied about “Today’s technology. Teacher assigned to talk about how did technology change your life and write everything about technology on whiteboard.
              Now a day Technology has an important role in the daily lives of people in society even more.  Especially in education has developed a variety of learning media on the Internet. Technology can help in learning the English language easily. Such as YouTube, Facebook, Dictionary English online and etc. There are programs that can be used to improve we English.

              Teacher ordered to do exercise in page 24. After that she assigned to work in small group read the article about Prof Casts and summarized the article and present in front of class.  For this class I had new vocabulary and new knowledge about technology.

Week 4 : News Stories: Natural Disasters

                   This class we still learned about natural disasters. She did to do exercise in page 5-10. After finished we are talk about the news and exchanged my ideas in my group. I have many knowledge examples new words news around the world and spelling correctly.

This class she ordered to answer a question "What technologies can you use to learn English? How?"

          I think the technology helps to improve my English. I use YouTube to learn English. YouTube is website social of the most popular. It’s have a many video from around the world. You can watch video about English language from native speaker and practice English language to listening, Speaking, Reading and writing. 

Week 3 : News Stories: Natural Disasters

Natural Disasters

          In class the teacher opened video Tsunami in Japan. She ordered to make group for analyzed a video, shared your ideas to friends in group and summarized information for present to the teacher and my friends in class.

       After the presentation finished. The teacher assigned us wrote the words about nature disasters on the whiteboard and practice speaking these words.

     When finished she assigned to write in activity 1 on my sheet then we studied about Myanmar flooding affects one million. The teacher assigned to make sheet page 2-3 and answered in class.

      For this class I used predicting skill, skimming skill and scanning skill in did the exercise. I had a new knowledge about new words and good pronunciation.

      After finished class she ordered we find a news about Nature Disasters and summarize is your ideas. Send in the next week.

Week 2 : A Healthy Diet

             On monday In class, we have been still studied about healthy diet lesson.Teachers instruct the group and discuss and change opinions about food. And then, she ordered us did weekly healthy diet planner and presented to the teacher and friends front of the class. 

            After that, She ordered us did practice in page 109  head of story is "Westerners turn to a Japanese diet"

            In class I had more and new knowledge but has something has made me confused but I will study harder than today for study in the future.

Week 1 : Introduction / A healthy diet

         First time for English Reading Strategies on Monday morning.The instructor was Asst.Prof.Dr. Usa Noytim, She talked about Course Syllabus and Introduction the course. The teacher explained about "What strategies do you use in reading ?" 

            After that, We started to learn a healthy diet ? , It's about foods healthy and unhealthy. She had to read the article and answer the questions. This lesson is a basic vocabulary and used in everyday life. For this is not too difficult for me. I guessing the words meaning from the text. In class, Teachers usually speak English, makes me practice listening skills.
